| Local ISP Example | ![]() |
|
A dialup call is placed from the Customer's home or office to the Local ISP's "Point of Presence". When the customer has made a connection to the Local ISP, their username and password are authenticated, once with the Local ISP, and sometimes again with the Local ISP's upline Major Service Provider. Upon successful authentication, the Customer is given access to the Internet. The Local ISP model has a number of obstacles that get in the way of consistent and reliable service. Because many Local ISPs are privately owned, major capital expenses to purchase new equipment and scale operations can cause traffic jams during peak usage while the company is experiencing "growing pains". Maintenance and ongoing operation of the local equipment also sometimes causes a delay in service when depending on a small, local provider. Lastly, many Local ISPs do not have the resources to operate their services redundantly (known as "fault tolerance") and service interruptions can occur through multiple Points of Failure between your Phone Company Central Office and the Major Service Provider via your Local ISP. Because your dialup call needs to travel down two additional phone transmission lines, stopping at your Local ISP's building on the way, service reliability suffers. Any broken link in the chain: inbound phone lines; data circuits; power outages; or equipment failure, will cause an interruption to your service. |
